Ebook About
DD/lb Romance | Age Difference | Mental Health | StandaloneA sweet, angsty love story of two men who are both nearing their breaking point and desperate to feel something other than grief and yearning. Love sucked. Correction: it sucked when you were in love with your parents’ closest friend and he didn’t feel the same. Madigan had always been there for me, from when I was a kid to when I got drafted by the NHL. Then I made the mistake of confessing my feelings for him. I was such a loser. My bipolar disorder was already difficult to manage as it was; add high anxiety and, most recently, as the cherry on a shit sundae, a suspension from the team that somehow resulted in Madigan wanting to act like a freaking life coach. Why couldn’t he see that I was perfect for him? We even had kink in common! Not that he knew that…This story takes place in Cara Dee’s Camassia Cove Universe, a fictional town where all books stand on their own, unless otherwise stated, and the reader can jump in wherever they want.

Book Power Play (Camassia Cove Universe Book 8) Review :

I want to start off by saying that I love this author. I read everything she writes. However, this story didn’t sit well at all. If you don’t want details of the story, please stop reading now. So....it wasn’t the age difference that bothered me. I read and edit May-December books all the time. It wasn’t the kink. Been there, done that. It was Madigan to some degree, but mostly Abel. I found it hard to like Abel. He came across as selfish and self-centered. When his brother is vulnerable and sharing a secret, Abel thinks this is a good time to yell and shame him for struggling to call Lincoln by a name that obviously hurts him to say, since he was 13 when his father died and would have strong memories of his father. Abel has scant memories and mostly knows Lincoln, so this bugs him. And....it’s all about Abel. When his parents are blindsided about the relationship and show honest emotions, Abel gets angry because they didn’t react the way he wanted them to and is ready to write them off when these are two people who stepped in to take care of him when they didn’t have to, and Abel came with plenty of baggage. My problem with Madigan is that he’s finding a way to ease his guilt about wanting Abel by justifying that he can keep Abel safe and help him with his BPD. Abel lost his father just when Madigan came into his life. Whether Abel admits it or not, Madigan replaced the empty space left by his father’s death. Madigan was fun and focused completely on Abel. So it’s off-putting to see a young man with a twisted sense of Madigan’s attentions who also struggles with BPD and panic attacks as being someone that a 40 year old man entrusted to look out for his friend’s son would consider as someone to lust after and dominate. Abel isn’t in a healthy state of mind as he deals with mental health issues, co-dependency with a man who created the dependency when Abel was extremely young, huge anger issues, etc. Any Dom worth his title would know this is wrong on all levels. Don’t get me wrong. I like my boys a little broken and I love hurt/comfort. But this takes that all to disturbing places. Normally when I don’t like a book, I just shrug it off. Can’t win them all. But this one just really hits all the wrong ways.
I usually read the 1 star reviews I get a good sense of a books flaws. The review I read wasn’t bad enough for me not to buy a Daddy/Middle Boy book but I did shelve it for months. The good: good writing as always, this author knows how to string words together; excellent dialogue, you really feel like your listening to real people talk. Great job of showing a realistic Middle sub after the unrealistic “discover of being a Middle”.The ok: the story is ok. Abel isn’t as whiny or bratty as some say, he’s a young adult dealing with a mental illness that is well written and believable. Mad is understandably freaked out by his attraction to a boy he’s known since Abel was 5. Their story just takes a little too long to get started, and I think the fact that Abel is a Middle seems contrived rather than realistic, though the author does a great job of showing his Middle side. The weird convenience of Mad just happening to be the right kind of Daddy Dom for a Middle, which is a tiny sliver in the cake that is links—just really unrealistic—what if Abel hadn’t been a Middle, just way too convenient. The bad: I really, really liked Gray and his relationship with Abel. But when Mad pulls Gray and Abel into a sex scene with all three of them, RIGHT AFTER telling Abel’s parents they’re lovers, it’s just completely off putting in the worst way. It brought home how justified Abel’s parents were in their concerns of the relationship, and was just so shocking and startling, that it nearly ruined the whole book. There really was no indication that a friends with benefits relationship between Abel and Gray would have not only continued “because the friends communicate through touch”, but that Mad would want to participate. Gross, unnecessary, and so far away from the relationship the book tried to portray between Mad and Abel that it felt dirty in the worst way. Conclusion: read the book, it’s pretty good, but skip to the next section after Abel tells his parents, trust me, you won’t feel good about this book after that scene. Also, I’ll say the one out of place scene that pushes the envelop too far seems to be a trend for this author—happened for me in Their Boy and her other Daddy novels. Just something to think about before you read.
