Some spoilers. This story wasn’t as fleshed out as I had hoped it would be. The main characters seemed to forget they were looking for his missing sister and her friend. Did the investigator know the hero prior to their meeting? He was unhinged, a caricature of a detective from a bad tv show. Next, this sentence “she put herself on some kind of hotline” or “they made sure each woman got some kind of substance abuse counseling”. Some kind of?? Flesh it out. The heroine’s car gets blown up. Why? Seriously. Creating all of this attention is the opposite of what they’re supposed to do. It’s silly. The girls were missing overnight and the investigator already had the MC as the suspect because he.... brought their phones to the police and they have 48 hrs before any leads disappear. That’s what made him a suspect? There were too many distractions and/or storylines imo. 3 ex’s (even though she doesn’t consider 2 of them ex’s), her friend Rose, the human trafficking, his whole team. It just read like a script from Criminal Minds or some quick movie on Netflix. Lastly, I get the story is about Jason and Jules but it would’ve been nice to have them talking to Sasha’s parents, ascend with heart stopping emotion because Andy’s grande finale didn’t do it for me. Heart wrenching and uplifting, making you red hot and skin-tinglingly cold in turns, this really is a complex and multifaceted book.The pace is fast, the plot believable and the characters come across as very alive in their humanity.Yes, it is horrifying how the villains thrive, and maybe the reason is that many people just don't want to believe that such evil is possible, they prefer to live their normal lives in their micro-universe and forget that war, human trafficking and child abuse are real as long as it doesn't impact them.But it does exist, as does love, heartbreak, friendship, hope and redemption. It's what I loved about this book - it is so well written it conveys it all, I really had a hard time putting it down. Even when I had the impulse to think "well, isn't this far-fetched?" I came to the conclusion that it is possible, the human psyche is strange like that.I'm glad I happened upon such a talented, promising author, and I look forward to reading the next book.
