Ebook About A 2017 RT Reviewer's Choice Nominee for Best Digital Historical! One of Goodreads' Best Romances of JulyA RT Book Review Top Pick!“Sebastian proves she is a new force to be reckoned with in historical romances.”—BooklistRogue. Libertine. Rake. Lord Courtenay has been called many things and has never much cared. But after the publication of a salacious novel supposedly based on his exploits, he finds himself shunned from society. Unable to see his nephew, he is willing to do anything to improve his reputation, even if that means spending time with the most proper man in London. Julian Medlock has spent years becoming the epitome of correct behavior. As far as he cares, if Courtenay finds himself in hot water, it’s his own fault for behaving so badly—and being so blasted irresistible. But when Julian’s sister asks him to rehabilitate Courtenay’s image, Julian is forced to spend time with the man he loathes—and lusts after—most. As Courtenay begins to yearn for a love he fears he doesn’t deserve, Julian starts to understand how desire can drive a man to abandon all sense of propriety. But he has secrets he’s determined to keep, because if the truth came out, it would ruin everyone he loves. Together, they must decide what they’re willing to risk for love.Book The Ruin of a Rake Review :
I really loved Courtenay- deeply sensuous, surprisingly kind, and generous with his affections. Julian, not so much. He is very shallow, cold, and totally ignorant of most emotions, other than lust. Of course he finally falls for Courtenay (who wouldn't?), but the most he can commit to is saying that Courtenay is his ''favorite person.'' Really? Also, I felt that the story line whipped from extremes. First, Courtenay and Julian are surprisingly open with themselves and each other about their homosexuality /bisexuality. Given the times, I would have expected them to be much more guarded. Which is what exactly happens near the end of the book. Courtenay and Julian are caught by Julian's sister, Eleanor, in a rather chaste kiss. She totally flips out (even though she has been aware of Julian's homosexuality, and in the past seems to have been OK with it) Huh? But even that is quickly resolved.Speaking of Eleanor, she has been in self-imposed exile from her husband, Lord Standish. Really, she leaves India for England to help lessen Julian's malaria bouts. Why she doesn't tell Standish, I don't know. At first, I thought this might be due to either Eleanor was uncomfortable with his mixed race, or Standish was uncomfortable with Julian, and believed that Eleanor was a floozy. But no, it's just a simple misunderstanding that Courtenay quickly figures out and solves. So despite a six year isolation from each other, suddenly all the past hurt is resolved in a couple of days (!).In addition, Julian is such an uptight person, that it came as a shock that he was the author of the scandalous book based on Courtenay. I just don't see Julian as capable of writing such fluff. And why is Julian so ashamed about his malaria, but not ashamed of his homosexuality? It just didn't make sense to me.But the book is worth a read just for Courtenay, so enjoy while not reading the details too closely. The Ruin of a Rake is Cat Sebastian’s third novel published in less than a year. I also own both of her other books, and I enjoyed them immensely. I spent my holiday in a leisurely fashion, and this was the perfect book to read while lounging. Like her other two novels, this is a m/m Regency story.Julian Medlock is convinced that dissolute Lord Courtenay is corrupting his sister. Eleanor assures Julian that Courtenay is just a friend, and then asks him to help improve Courtenay’s reputation. Julian likes things in his life to be neat, orderly, and predictable. Courtenay is the complete opposite, and Julian is reluctant to have anything to do with someone who is so different.Courtenay knows that his very presence bothers Julian, but he doesn’t care. In fact, Courtenay deliberately provokes the staid Julian just to see his reaction. It doesn’t seem like these two could possibly have anything common, but as they begin to spend time together, they both discover a strong mutual attraction. The Ruin of a Rake is an amazing book. There is just the right amount of angst, especially after the revelation of a regrettable secret. Julian is a moderating influence on Courtenay, and Courtenay helps Julian step outside of his comfort zone. They have great chemistry together, but they have to be very discreet because of the legal ramifications of the era, and Sebastian addresses these issues in a very clever way. Also, I spent a semester in college doing an independent study on gothic novels, so I appreciated the inclusion of an original gothic novel in this book! Oh, and there are tons of cats as well!I would absolutely recommend The Ruin of a Rake. This book is loosely connected to Sebastian’s previous novels, but it functions well as a standalone. That said, if you haven’t read her previous books, you really ought to do yourself a favor and read them either before or after this one. Sebastian is truly a gifted writer with a knack for characterization and redemptive arcs. I am already looking forward to her next book- it’s going to be a long five months!
